A BRAND WITH TRADITION
-
EXPERIENCE OF 125 YEARS
With over 125 years of experience we create durable quality tools for optimal results. Our limited edition range “Bison 1879” is forged by hand in Großschönau, Saxonia – Made in Germany in the best tradition of craftsmanship.
BISON 1879 originates from the family tradition of master-smith Moritz Trept, a tradition that later became BISON, the company. Today BISON is synonymous with high-quality tools and craftsmanship, and when using them this heritage becomes abundantly clear. -
FORGED MASTERFULLY // WITH TRADITIONAL CRAFTSMANSHIP
The traditional craft of BISON is the art of forging. We are proud of this. That’s why we are re-launching the handforged BISON 1879 original-axe. As a very high-grade traditional product this axe is characterized by its typical masterfully forged surface with excellent durability. Additionally, every axe comes with a robust leather guard to protect the blade – the BISON engraved in it represents the Axe’s originality and authenticity.

QUALITY STEEL // HANDFORGED FOR DURABILITY
We maintain our high level of quality through the use of high quality grade A (DIN 17100) steel. After forging the heads undergo a special tempering process that ensures maximum durability of the cutting edge.
Subject to its intended area of use, the cutting edges are then precisely ground to their specific sharpnesses. Every axe is ground to a specific sharpness to ensure optimal results in its intended area of use. The cutting edge is ground very sharply for axes used for felling, medium sharp for universal axes and crowned for splitting axes. -
HICKORY-WOOD // THE MOST RESILIENT HANDLES
For the handles on our 1879 range we use assorted Hickory-woods only. The wood from this American tree-type is very hard, resilient and durable. Furthermore, its elastic properties help it to absorb vibrations making Hickory the ideal material for handles of axes and hatchets.
The natural color of hickory wood varies between a very light beige and a darker more reddish tone. The color has no effect on the quality or usability of the handles, in fact, a lot of customers value this individual colorscheme that each axe has.
The assembly of the head and handle uses 2 safety wedges for hatchets and 3 safety wedges for Axes. The wedges lock firmly into the wood to fix the head securly on the axe
